My journey into short term vacation homes began in Orlando, Florida as I first ventured into short term vacation homes purchasing my first vacation rental home in Davenport, which is near Disney World, a quaint vacation home community zoned for short term rentals near the top theme parks.

Little did I know, I would soon be in for a surprise of a lifetime as I would soon encounter the true realities of what it meant to own and operate my very own vacation rental home near Disney.

My first rental home was a massive 14 bedroom luxury vacation home to boot, which meant it was a sizable investment in addition to be a handful of work!

I hired a property manager from a recommendation of a local realtor, and I blindly moved forward with the deal and purchased the home from the former owner who was leaving the business.

Pretty soon, I got thrown into a bucket of cold ice, or perhaps a very cold swimming pool – as on my first month of owning the rental property, I had a massive bedbug infestation in the entire house which soon required me to shut the house down for over a month while losing a month’s worth of income. Followed by that, I soon had a child run straight into the sliding glass door outside to the pool balcony area.

I was extremely excited, but soon my excitement began to wane as I saw the deep harsh realities of what all was involved.

Shortly after that, I got a dreaded phone call on a Sunday afternoon while I was attempting to relax in the porch after a long 40 hour work week as a pharmacist

And that was my property manager calling me, in near frantic mode telling me there was a major guest complaint and the guests were demanding their 2 weeks worth of rental fees back, and a full refund for their stay because they were unhappy with the condition of the home, stating the house was in need of deep cleaning, repair and a whole new set of furniture!

I was flabbergasted, because at that point I had just purchased the home a month prior and invested a huge sum of money and drained my entire life savings at the time to purchase the home, and now I was being told that my home was in complete disrepair!

It would soon be a several year long period of trial and error, learning and making costly financial mistakes before I would learn the true in and out of the business.

Eventually, I accumulated a sizable portfolio of several 12-14 bedroom vacation homes near Disney for short term rentals.
